#1. During the rule of the Soviet Union, what were two items most frequently confiscated by guards at border crossings?

EEM began as a Bible-smuggling operation in 1961 while the Soviet Union was at the height of its influence. Any mention of religion or Bibles was strictly prohibited. Fourteen 20-year-olds traveled behind the Iron Curtain to tell people about Jesus. When they arrived overseas, they realized people had no access to the Bible in their heart languages. Gwen Hensely, the man who started EEM, completely changed the mission to provide God’s Word to people in their native tongue. As Gwen and the rest of the original team went through border crossings, they were always asked, “Do you have any guns or Bibles?” Governing guards understood the power of the message found in the Bible.

In 1989 the Soviet Union fell, and the Iron Curtain tumbled to the ground. This allowed for Bibles to be legal again to millions of people. Since then, EEM has sought to provide the Word of God to all who ask for it. In 2021, EEM gave 1.5 million Bibles and Bible-based materials throughout Eastern Europe and beyond. Free to All.

#2. True or False: EEM was able to save a ministry partner in Greece over $1 million in its annual budget.

In 2014, as the Middle Eastern refugee crisis emerged, one of our ministry partners requested 60,000 Farsi and Arabic Bibles (costing ≈$18 U.S. dollars each) to distribute to refugees pouring into Greece. EEM was able to fully fund this project, eliminating the financial burden by saving this ministry partner over $1 million. This allowed its funds to be used to feed, clothe and provide for the physical needs of refugees.

A primary challenge in Eastern Europe and beyond is the lack of access to God’s Word. EEM works to provide Bibles for free to all who ask and to partners, including churches, orphanages, prisons, schools, and more every year!

#3. True or False: EEM owns a state-of-the-art, maximum capacity printing press in Vienna, Austria.

EEM believes in contributing to the local economy and maximizing the use of God’s funds. We do this by using existing printers in the regions we serve like Serbia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and many other countries. This allows EEM to be highly cost-effective in contracting with local businesses as well as maintaining and creating jobs. When you give to EEM, you not only provide access to the Bible in local languages, you contribute to local economies.
